"American Idol" season 11 winner Phillip Phillips
is out of the hospital and resting following an intense surgical procedure to deal with kidney stones
.

The 21-year-old singer went under the knife last Wednesday to remove kidney stones that were too large to pass and on Monday he told E! News that he was on the mend.

"I'm out of the hospital and back to work," Phillips told the site, which posted a photo of him grimacing as he signed autographs just days after undergoing a nearly seven-hour procedure. "Looking forward to the future." Phillips, who is slated to join the rest of the top 10 on July 6 when the 45-show "Idol" summer tour kicks off in Detroit.

According to TMZ, the surgery was much more intense than doctors expected. The site reported that when surgeons went in to remove the temporary stent implanted in Phil's right kidney months earlier they found that it had been in place so long it had become embedded.

The device had to be cut out with a laser, but doctors said the surgery was successful and Phillips is now reportedly recovering in a Malibu mansion loaned to him by one of the "Idol" bosses. A spokesperson for Phillips could not be reached for further comment at press time.

The Georgia singer can finally celebrate the fact that his first single, the winner's anthem "Home," made history
with the second-best digital-sales week ever for an "Idol" contestant and the biggest sales week of any coronation song since 2003.

The Mumford & Sons-like song has won praise from critics as one of the best "Idol" winner tunes ever and raised hopes that Phillips could potentially beat the recent string of lackluster sales debuts from non-country male winners from the show.
