Painting kitchen cabinets can brighten up a kitchen without having to resort to replacing the entire cabinetry unit when it starts to look old or worn. Both painted and stained cabinets can look almost new with a little preparation, cleaning and a few coats of paint. In just a few steps this do-it-yourself home improvement project will have your kitchen cabinets looking new.

• Removing the hardware is the first step in painting your kitchen cabinets. Ideally the entire unit could be removed but if not then remove the shelves and doors for ease of painting. These items will need to be painted but it will be easier to paint with them removed.

• All cabinet surfaces will need to be completely cleaned. All dirt, grease and grime will need to be removed as it will prevent the paint from adhering to the surface. Furniture polish and household cleaners should remove most, if not all, of the dirt.

• To help the paint adhere to the surface better you will need to lightly sand all parts of the kitchen cabinet. Sanding allows the surface of the cabinets to break which will absorb and hold the paint better. Once the sanding is finished wipe down the surface with a rag.

• If you are painting a stained cabinet you will need to apply a coat of primer before painting. If they are just painted cabinets you can proceed to the painting step. Primer helps create a surface that absorbs the paint better and achieves a smoother finished look. Most stained cabinets are wooden so make sure to use a primer that is designed specifically for use on wood.

• Use a three to six inch bristled paint brush to paint the kitchen cabinets. When painting you will want to start with the top of the cabinet and work your way down. The floor of the cabinet unit should be the last thing that you paint before the doors.

• At least two coats of paint are recommended. Wait for the first coat of paint to dry and then reapply following the same directions as when you first painted.

When cabinets start to look worn or old, or the look of the kitchen appears outdated, painting kitchen cabinets can be a low-cost alternative solution that allows you to brighten up the look of a kitchen. With a little preparation and a can of paint, the kitchen cabinets can look almost brand new.
