SEATTLE -
San Diego State-Washington Final Results
The 52nd-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team's rally fell just short as it dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 29 Washington Friday afternoon at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Aztecs fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Huskise improve to 6-2.For the first time in four matches, SDSU was unable to capture the doubles point and trailed 1-0 in the early going. Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana Iriarte were downed 8-4 at No. 3 by Julijia Lukac and Riko Shimizu. Then the UW tandem of Denise Dy and Samantha Smith defeated the Aztecs' top duo of Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, 8-2, at the top of the order to secure the point.
Washington took a 2-0 lead when Capucine Gregoire took down Sierra Ellison, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4, and later tacked on another point when 18th-ranked Dy earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over No. 117 Julia Wais.
San Diego State cut its deficit to 3-1 when Kristin Buth defeated Adrijana Pavlovic at No. 6, 6-4, 6-2. The Aztecs then narrowed the gap when Antonana Iriarte was a straight-sets winner over Smith, 7-5, 6-4, at the third position.
The Huskies, however, put an end to the SDSU comeback when Andjela Nemcevic rallied for a three-set victory over Cioffi. The Aztec senior won the first set, 6-4, but could not finish off her counterpart as she was on the wrong end of the score in the final two sets, 6-4, 6-0.
Alicia Aguilar provided the final score when she beat Shimizu at No. 5, 6-7, 7-5, 10-8.
The Aztecs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they face No. 34 Saint Mary's at Nordstrom Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon PT.
